Rap heavyweight Rick Ross is taking the hard partying boys of LMFAO to court, with the 37-year-old claiming that the refrain of the duo’s massive 2010 hit Party Rock Anthem is a direct rip-off of his 2006 debut single Hustlin’.
The lawsuit points out the similarities between Redfoo and SkyBlu‘s “Everyday I’m shufflin’…” lyric and Ross’s original “Everyday I’m hustlin’…”, stating that the use is an illegal derivative and “an obvious attempt to capitalize on the fame and success of Hustlin’.”
LMFAO are yet to respond to the suit, which if successful, could cost the pair a hefty figure. Ross is seeking maximum statutory damages and Party Rock Anthem has sold 7.5 million copies to date, as well as being used in films, advertisements, and even LMFAO’s clothing line.
Ross is no stranger to lawsuits, with the Floridian rapper having been taken to court by New Orleans jazz outfit Batiste Brothers Band for plagiarism last August. He also faced legal action from a jewellery store in Texas last year after casually forgetting to pay for 3 Rolex watches he ordered. As you do.
