I had what I can only consider to be the pleasure of listening to the new Born Ruffians album Say It, due to be released on the 28th of May. This Canadian born trio recorded their album in two and a half weeks alongside producer Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Panda Bear).
Compared to the likes of The Strokes, Vampire Weekend and The Pixies, Say It really branches out in establishing Born Ruffians as their own band that needs no comparison.
The Born Ruffians experimented with Mini moogs and saxophones during recording, which reflects well on their ambition to move forward and not just rest on their laurels. Although most of it was scaled back in the mixing process, it was apparently important for them to add things just to hear how it sounded.
Say It comes with darker lyrics; much more prominent than their previous hits we’ve come to know and love, and although the actual melodies are still upbeat and epitomize the essential fun of their music, this juxtaposition of themes within the tracks works in their favour to really show that these boys aren’t just about making superficial indie beats.
The ideas behind creating Say It (and the album as a whole), really attests to their ability to square off and express themselves in the ever changing indie rock scene and has helped them produce a killer record.
Hopefully we will hear bigger and better things from Born Ruffians in the years to come but for now they can celebrate what should be another successful album.
