Do you remember the way pop music used to sound? Artists like The Beatles and Kate Bush used to hold high the banner of pop music, but in recent years as the genre has been filled with glorified abortions such as Panic At The Disco and Maroon 5 the banner of quality pop lays limp in a fetid breeze of mediocrity. Enter WIM.
Sounding like the bastard lovechild of The Beatles and The Strokes if it was raised on Jeff Buckley and Radiohead, WIM craft perfectly polished shiny pop songs with a 70s rock edge.
The last track on the album Something For You could easily sit on any of The Beatles later albums, while second track Diamond is a very Radiohead, In Rainbows style dirge. Third track Milk With My Tea is a funky singalong pop gem, featuring some beautifully understated vocal harmonies, and is sure to be a massive hit with lactose lovers everywhere.
Vocalist Martin Solomon has an amazingly charming voice. Onstage he is Vince Noir incarnate and when he sings, hold on to you girlfriend. The whole band are as tight as a Jewish Scotsman, and they work together to create a sound far greater than the sum of its parts.
Crossing genres like Christopher Skase crosses borders, WIM still manage to deliver a cohesive album, experimenting but never straying too far from their core sound.
