Billy Elliot The Musical is heading back to Australia for the first time in 10 years to celebrate a decade since the musical wrapped up here.
It’s not set to come back until next year but producers will start searching for young talent for the musical soon.
The musical first debuted in Australia back in 2007. It was adapted from the 2000 film of the same name with Elton John penning the music for it.
John said in a statement that he has, “very fond memories of the Sydney production.”
“It was the first city outside of the UK we mounted the show and found many incredibly talented children who would go on to carry the show through its successful Australian run. It is truly the most heart-warming show and I am so grateful that new generations of Australians will continue to experience its joy and inspiration.”
Australian Producer Louise Withers further confirmed that the Anniversary return will bring back together the Australian team behind its original run.
The musical was a hit from the start, winning seven Helpmann Awards including Best Musical. It then went onto win ten Tony Awards after a successful Broadway run in the US.
Sydney and Melbourne were the only cities to experience the musical because it was too large a production to tour but adjustments mean it will now be able to visit more cities. It’s set to start at Sydney’s Lyric Theatre in October 2019 before moving onto Melbourne in February 2020.
It will then move onto Perth in June 2020, Brisbane in July 2020 and Adelaide in September 2020.
