Back in April, the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog film adaptation was released to the world, and the backlash was immediate.
Much of the disdain stemmed from the titular hedgehog’s anthropomorphic character design, with the general consensus being that it was, well, cursed beyond belief. The key culprits centred around Sonic’s uncomfortable bodily and facial proportions (incredibly human teeth, for instance).
In response, the studio delayed the film and swore to redesign the speedy video game character’s design. Now, we have our first look at the new and improved Sonic the Hedgehog, with the release of a new trailer for the film.
Sonic is considerably less freakish this time around. With bigger eyes and ears and in general, a more cartoonish and less menacing vibe, the design tweaks move the character far closer to the image fans of the 90s video games will recall. It’s probably a good idea for the film’s success; but I for one happen to miss the abject, godless creature that we were promised initially.
The new trailer sees Sonic – voiced by Ben Schwartz – coming to earth due to people on his home planet attempting to steal his powers. Once here, he teams up with police sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) as he attempts to escape the clutches of Dr. Robotnik, who is played by Jim Carrey.
