“Hey, hey guys! Anchorman 2 is a real thing and is coming out, remember, yeah?” is basically all that you can hear in the below video which strangely enough doesn’t use any of those words. Like the dude who asks you how your day was then interrupts you to talk about how his day was, Ron Burgundy has appeared in yet another attempt to plug Anchorman 2 directly to Australian audiences, this time disguised as a “funny” promo clip for Melbourne Cup.
Yes, yes, Ron Burgundy knows about the Melbourne Cup, the race that stops a nation – or used to, anyway. It’s all very fun and current “cos lyk, omg did u know the Melbz cup IZ TODAY?” totes. And what was that, Ron? Sexual innuendo, you say? Sah brave.
Considering our international reputation as illegal pirates, it’s easy to be flattered into thinking Paramount would release Australia-specific content in the lead-up to the film’s release date. Don’t kid yourself, though – Will Ferrell is appearing in a whole series of these clips around the world, keeping costs down, exposure high and, coming in at under 1 minute on average, perfectly engineered to go viral. Except for the fact that they aren’t very good.
Instead of releasing a 40-second clip promoting the film and making Aussies feel all warm and fuzzy and included, the Anchorman 2 team have given us 40 seconds worth of reasons to not pay real money to see this film. #LetDown.
