Will Smith Confirms “Dramatic” Reimagining of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

We’re getting a reboot of classic sitcom Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, except with a twist. Will Smith has confirmed the crafting of a “dramatic” reimagining of the ’90s sitcom. With the series to debut in 2021, there are already two seasons locked in.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Smith decided to make the reimagined Fresh Prince after he caught Morgan Cooper’s —a Kansas City filmmaker— 2019 trailer for the show. The trailer was, “what The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air might look like if it suddenly returned to the airwaves in 2019.”

Will Smith has now recruited the filmmaker to join him in creating the reimagining of the show.

Now, the show has been taken on by Peacock for two whole seasons. Smith announced the news via Instagram.

“18 months ago, a young filmmaker from Kansas City [Morgan Cooper] uploaded a video on YouTube reimagining The [Fresh Prince] of Bel-Air for present day as a DRAMA,” he began.

“Everybody sent it to me,” he said.

“It was outstanding. I had NEVER envisioned revisiting the Banks family in this way. We knew this was special, so we called [Chris Collins] and asked him to lead the team (he wrote on The Wire) and he said YES!”

The new, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reimagining will debut on NBC’s streaming service Peacock in 2021.
