CLEWS Have Gifted Us With A Playlist Of Empowering Bangers In Honour Of New Mini-Festival 'The Collective'

A new mini-festival celebrating diversity and amazing Aussie music dubbed ‘The Collective’ is making its debut in Sydney this weekend, and headliners CLEWS are getting us hyped with a playlist that captures the spirit of the event.

Going down at the iconic Lansdowne Hotel this Saturday, 8th December, The Collective will showcase a talented range of local shooting star acts who identify as female or non-binary, including CLEWS, Wollongong shed-rockers Totty, post-punk duo Cry Club, fellow ‘Gong locals Spit Chewy and The Buoys.

“We are so lucky to be working with this incredible group of artists,” organisers spruik in a statement.

“It’s important for us to showcase just how many talented female and non-binary artists are in Oz right now. We can’t wait for the show!”

And to get us even more amped, the CLEWS ladies Lily and Grace have assembled the ultimate pump-up playlist for our listening pleasure, complete with a bite-sized rationale of each of their song selections.

1. ‘Best Of My Love’ – The Emotions

It’s literally impossible not to feel pumped within the first five seconds of this song.

2. ‘Cool’ – Soccer Mommy

The way the last warped guitar solo just melts away is so cheeky and COOL, what a dramatic exit.

3. ‘thank u, next’ – Ariana Grande

This is Ari’s MOMENT. We love this, it’s instantly iconic.

4. ‘Daddi’ – Cherry Glazerr

Our friend Dan put us on to Cherry Glazerr and we’re so glad he did because they rock. So stuffed and ready for the rest of this album.

5. ‘My Delirium’ – Ladyhawke

Ladyhawke has been pecking at our hearts since high school and never gets old. This song does that thing we love that also happens in PJ Harvey’s Good Fortune – holding on the end of the verse phrases and accenting the same note. So swaggery and cool.

6. ‘Dark Corner Dance Floor’ – Phantastic Ferniture

Our friend Liz from this band is one of our favourite guitarists EVER. She shreds and so does this groovy song; love the call and response chorus.

7. ‘Missing U’ – Robyn

Robyn is actually on our radar through her feature on a Metronomy song from a couple of years ago. This one is a four to the floor heart beat banger.

8. ‘Edge of Seventeen’ – Stevie Nicks

“I’ll put on some music”. “I love this song!”

9. ‘Losing You’ – Solange

Old Solange is still gold Solange.

10. ‘Trigger Bang’ – Lily Allen

We have been in love with Lily Allen for nearly a decade. This song is completely amazing and gives off M.I.A. Paper Planes vibes.

11. ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ – Wolf Alice

Wolf Alice won the Mercury for this album and this song alone would have deserved it. Feels like Ellie is crying the chorus right into your heart.

12. ‘Vincent Van Gogh’ – RVG

Really dig this song from local heavy hitters. We’re kind of new to them but “the damage you do is worse than you damage you get” is a great line.

13. ‘Got To Be Real’ – Cheryl Lynn

Our mum freaking LOVES disco and so do we. Just try and sit still, you can’t.

14. ‘Pussy Is God’ – King Princess

This song is fresh as fuck and actually so addictive.

15. ‘Violet’ – Hole

Hole rocked our world when we were teenagers and we will scream this song at the top of our lungs until we’re in the ground.

16. ‘Swell’ – imbi the girl

This is a beautiful song from our dear friend imbi. Their live show is amazing too.

17. ‘Lucy’s’ – Girlpool

Girlpool are brilliant songwriters and we love their new stuff.

18. ‘We Appreciate Power’ – Grimes

19. ‘Friends’ – E^ST

This song keeps popping up everywhere for us. When the production kicks in on the first chorus it feels like someone is cracking an egg on your head!! In a good way!!

20. ‘Tightrope’ – Janelle Monae

Love her ‘Dirty Computer’ album too but this song was our introduction to Janelle Monae and it is such a jam.
