We might not all remember but we’ve all certainly heard or seen something of the legendary Daft Punk Alive 2006-07 Tour with the concluding statement that it was the bees knees, ankles, thorax, stinger and stripes. What many people don’t realize is that this tour became a catalyst for change in the live arena of dance music.
This was brought to my attention in late 2010 in an interview with David Dewale of Soulwax/2manydjs. The “pyramid light show” ushered in a new era of dance music. It illustrated that we had barely tapped into the potential of dance music and DJ’s as performers. Sure, they were not the first ones to do this but they are certainly the ones who turned the most heads.
This isn’t to dismiss the DJ on any level. I love going out and seeing an amazing DJ pump out great tunes and ignite the dance floor and I hope that never comes to an end. What I hope to do here is celebrate those who have pushed the bounds of dance music in the live arena in recent years, turning a dance party into a full blown live performance.
So as the 12 days of Christmas come to an end, let’s keep the fun going with the 12 days of Dancemas, bringing a different artist and a different show forward everyday.
Tomorrow…As Heard on Radio Soulwax. But for now, here is some Daft Punk Alive 2007.
