One of my very last stops before returning to Melbourne was the seaside city of Brighton, England, and it’s here, after returning from New York, that I discovered Brooklyn singer Eddi Front. A little write up in local publication XYZ in Brighton caught my eye, describing her as Lana Del Rey with jazz overtones, and so I jumped onto SoundCloud to discover her music for myself. Needless to say I love it.
I wouldn’t, however, compare her to Lana ‘Lizzie’ Del Rey in sound, which is so delicate, haunting and whimsical. I don’t think Ivana Carrescia, who records under moniker Eddi Front, can be compared to anyone in her genre, which, come to that, I find difficult to define. But maybe it shouldn’t be. Some artists can’t be placed in little boxes with labels, because they are just that individual and unique.
You may have Julia Stone come to mind listening to Eddi Front, but there is a distinct difference, which could be the near absence of full music under her vocals, with usually just a simple piano that only accentuates her pretty, slightly husky sound.
It’s also this sparseness of music and vocals that risks some of her tunes sounding similar, but each has a slight bend in the other direction to make them different enough.
Eddi Front released a beautiful self-titled debut EP in November with Best Fit Recordings. Gigantic is one of the tracks on this EP and is my favourite. The EP also includes a stunning Nick Cave cover of Into My Arms, which she performs so beautifully, you must have a listen for yourself!
