The 411:
Southey is the project from Sydney songwriter Tom Southey. His debut single ‘Run River’ is an introduction to the type of storyteller Southey has been flourishing into over the last few years.
In making ‘Run River’, Southey worked with Peter Holz (Gang of Youths, Vance Joy) and Nick Franklin (CLEWS, Polish Club) after laying down the track out of his Surry Hills home studio.
“I wrote ‘Run River’ a few years ago, it was one of those songs that just came quite organically,” Southey says.
“I often like writing things that intrigue me, as if someone else wrote it and I’m hearing it for the first time. It’s a strange paradox but that’s where this song started.”
The song is wrapped up in emotion and warm production, a nod to Southey’s own creative influences. His songwriting is led by an interest in talking about the environment around him and the experiences – from the day to day, to the more broad and conceptual – ‘Run River’ is just the beginning of his story.
