Future Music Festival Headliners – What You May Not Know: Round 2

It’s time for the second instalment of our feature on getting to know the main players at the 2013 Future Music Festival. If you missed Part 1 – click here – otherwise, read on to discover some interesting facts that you can run off your tongue when you’re trying to strike up a convo between sets in the mosh pit.

Fun. – Not only have their songs seemingly stayed on Nova’s playlists for an eternity, but Fun. are also responsible for a pretty significant sales record in the US earlier this year. In April, their breakout hit We Are Young broke a major digital sales record. Billboard announced the song was No.1 on their Hot 100 chart for the sixth consecutive week, and, at the time, it had become the first song to gain 300,000 downloads for six weeks straight. Ka-ching!

The Temper Trap – Mike Skinner once rapped, “It’s the hardest way to make an easy living”, and the boys from The Temper Trap are no different. Like several of our country’s biggest groups, the band formed through a series of shifts at work. And which workplace is responsible for bringing together the boys who would go on to create global hits like Sweet Disposition? General Pants at Melbourne Central. We can’t confirm, though, whether the boys honour their former employer by wearing GP clothes in photo shoots.

Rita Ora – It’s only this year that we’ve seen Ora’s name splash onto the local scene, but we could have seen her a bit earlier and in a much cheesier setting. Ora auditioned for a television program to find Britain’s contestant for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, but a few episodes in, she withdrew from the competition as she felt she wasn’t ready.

Ellie Goulding – Ms. Goulding picked up her first instrument at nine years of age, but it wasn’t one you could typically write too many songs on. She started giving her pipes a workout on the clarinet, took up the guitar at age 14, and then started songwriting a year later.

Steve Aoki – If you ever become a security guard and inspect Steve Aoki’s luggage, you may just find a shuttlecock sitting somewhere amongst all his DJ gear. The electro-house producer was a star player on the varsity badminton team during his days at Newport Harbour High School, before he graduated in 1995.

A-Trak – The Montreal DJ (real name Alain Macklovitch) is widely regarded as one of the best DJs in the world, and he has the credits on the honour roll to prove it. He won the DMC World DJ Championship in 1997 at age 15, and became the first person to win all three of the major world DJ competitions, run by DMC, ITF and Vestax.
