Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.
In this series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.
Here are their love letters to records that forever changed their lives.
Peter Bibby: Brainbombs – ‘Obey’
Dear Brainbombs,
When I first heard your album Obey, you scared the shit out of me. I don’t know if you are joking or if you should be in jail, but I love it too much. Your filthy, perverted trash gives me a kind of soothing. A soothing that comes from knowing that as shitty as I am, there is always something worse.
Would you guys be fun to hang out with? Or would I turn into a subject of one of your songs? All the riffs are so tasty, the drumming so good, guitar sound so sparse yet gnarly and then, the vocals. Dark and creepy poetry delivered in a voice from my nightmares. Describing things that make my stomach churn yet are somehow so satisfying. This album is like a horror film. I don’t recommend it to anyone. I recommend it to everyone. If you can endure this record and come away not the slightest bit disturbed you should head straight to therapy because you have no soul.

When a song titled ‘Die You Fuck’ is the most palatable song on an album, you know you are in for a bit of a hell ride. You have successfully traumatised me and beaten me into submission. I play you as often as I can handle. I try to show my friends but they look at me with a confused kind of disgust. They don’t understand you like I do, Brainbombs. I try to play you quietly to them while they sleep, planting your ugly seeds into their brains, some of them are starting to warm to you.
I never knew how truly twisted music could be before I met you, and how much I can still love it endlessly.
I love you, Brainbombs.
Sincerely,
Peter
