Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.
In this Love Letter To A Record series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.
Julius Boess, Club Camèl – Parcels, Live Vol.1, (2020)
Dear Parcels,
I write this with love, and thanks for creating the album I never knew I needed.
‘Parcels Live Vol.1’ was the collection of songs that got me through the first NSW lockdown. I was first exposed to the record on YouTube, where the band posted a 3-track teaser video before the full album release, and I was blown away by how tight and perfect they sounded playing the songs live. I probably listened to it till I fell asleep that night with my Bose headphones on. Once the album was released, I had it on repeat. My slow days working from home were spent head bopping to the 18 tracks played flawlessly by the five musicians. Once restrictions lifted, I would go over to Cole and Sean’s place, and we would drink red wine into the night, watch the YouTube video of the performance and be inspired by the chemistry within the group. I even showed my parents the record who are big music fans but rarely listen to modern artists. They were straight away obsessed and purchased the album on vinyl. I don’t think there is a bad song on the record, but if I had to choose my favourite three songs, I would go with ‘Bemyself’, ‘Lightenup’, and ‘Elude’, all of which are best enjoyed in good company.

Club Camèl are an indie-rock five-piece from the NSW South Coast who’ve just returned with their tropical new single ‘Keepin’ Me Up’ – produced by Jack Nigro (Middle Kids, Pacific Avenue, The Terrys).
“‘Keepin’ Me Up’ began its life deep in my loop pedal as I soloed in a single room granny flat during the first lockdown of 2020,” explains lead vocalist, Julius Boess.
“With the opening lick and rhythm cemented in my ears, these components would become the basis of the track the band would work on for the following year. Lyrically inspired by 70s soul music by the likes of The Spinners and Marvin Gaye.”
The saxophone used in the tracks bridge belonged to Julius’s late grandfather.
“My grandfather (who I was named after) was the main reason I learned saxophone. The tenor saxophone was shipped over from the USA, and it’s the only thing I have of his, so it’s very special to me.”
