Love Letter To A Record: Oly Sherman On #1 Dads’ ‘Golden Repair’

Many of us can link a certain album to pivotal moments in our lives. Whether it’s the first record you bought with your own money, the chord you first learnt to play on guitar, the song that soundtracked your first kiss, the album that got you those awkward and painful pubescent years or the one that set off light bulbs in your brain and inspired you to take a big leap of faith into the unknown – music is often the catalyst for change in our lives and can even help shape who we become.

In this Love Letter To A Record series, Music Feeds asks artists to reflect on their relationship with music and share with us stories about the effect music has had on their lives.

Oly Sherman – #1 Dads, ‘Golden Repair’ (2020)

Dear #1 Dads,

I know I’ve kind of known you for a while now, I’m writing this letter in hope that you notice the recent change as much as I have. From when you first spoke to me, and now when hearing your new words, you have filled the void within my lonesome, musical life.

I need not know what I would have done if your soft beginning of ‘Freedom Fighter’ hadn’t woken me. Your piano playing is interstellar, your drive is exuberant, and you give me such relief from the minute I press play, to the moment I put you on shuffle.

You are a ballad, my ballad. I see a lot of you in me. Your work is sung in such grace, such mawkishness, so calming. And yet, as before, I feel like I’m rediscovering my awe for you.

There’s not much else to say besides keep doing you. There is no doubt that I am not alone in these feelings.

Thank you, gentlemen.

Oly
