Elliot The Bull – ‘Beast’
Central Coast alt krew Elliott The Bull have come charging out of the gate with a monstrous new single dubbed Beast. Ironically beautiful, the title track from the band’s forthcoming LP marks a sonic gear-shift for the bewhiskered brotherhood, stripping away the lushly layered production that characterised their last record for a more raw sound that lets their immense musical talents shine through. Beast kicks off with spellbinding Fleetwood Mac-esque guitars and low, warm vocals that trigger Bush and ’90s Nick Cave flashbacks, and burns slowly to a fiery climax. Slum Sociable – ‘Name Call’
Melbourne’s Edward Quinn and Miller Upchurch (AKA Slum Sociable) are currently working on their debut album, but they’ve just fired up the hype train by dropping new single Name Call. It’s got spaghetti western-style whistling in it, which means it’s guaranteed to be great.
The track moulds some plodding piano and marching drums into some chill (but still kinda serious) vibes, and then there’s, well, the whistling, which in case you haven’t noticed is my favourite thing about it.
Slum Sociable will play shows in Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney across November and December. / Tom Williams, News Editor
Pussy Riot – Straight Outta Vagina (feat. Desi Mo & Leikeli47)
“Don’t play stupid, don’t play dumb. Vagina’s where you’re really from,” goes the chorus to Pussy Riot’s new single, which if you hadn’t guess already, is about women’s rights in the face of the repression of patriarchal forces of society and the objectifying gaze of capitalism. More than that though this song is about how fucking awesome women are, and how central the female mind and body is to art, the economy and society in general. And the band don’t waste any time getting to the point with simply amazing lyrics like “vaginas in the art museum, and people buy tickets just to see them” and “vaginas going to top the charts, vaginas fill your shopping carts”.
Sure to get the goat of Men’s Rights Activists and Vladimir Putin (although the lack of an allusion to Trump seems like a missed opportunity, maybe “vaginas in the oval office, can’t grab them to keep them off it”) Straight Outta Vagina proves Pussy Riot are a not only a political force to be reckoned with, but also a musical one. / Michael Carr/ Contributor
Hudson Mohawke – ‘Shanghaied’
Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke has come on board to produce the original soundtrack for a new video game Watch_Dogs 2. HudMo has generously shared the first track Shanghaied ahead of its release, and to be fair to him it could have easily been a release on its own.
A heavy and emotive cut from the Glasgow muso, this track shows off a darker side to HudMo, showcasing a mix of piano-driven melodies, bass heavy transitions and dissonant samples just to keep you on your toes. His ability to craft a track like this that is outwardly diverse from the production on his two albums so far is hugely impressive. Take Your Time – Sleep In
Take Your Time – Sleep In: Words that are, at once, a band name/ song title and sound life advice we all need to hear once and a while.
Take Your Time is an outfit helmed by Aussie musos Ang Schilling (of Swimming) and Lee Hannah (The Townhouse), who have just released their debut 7” via Japanese Wallpaper’s label Neat Lawn. First track Sleep In is the sonic equivalent of a hug from a loving friend when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Familiar, warm and immediately calming.
Lighty twinkling keys, steady percussion, restrained, subtle production and the duo’s erudite, harmonised vocals repeating, believably, “it’s going to happen soon, it’ll come to you.” According to the band, Sleep In “is like a big warm embrace for your loved ones, letting them know that you’ve got the time to give them what they need.” So give the song a spin, then go hug a friend. Kimchi Princi – She That Princi (prod Atro)
Kimchi Princi is back with explicit new single She That Princi, with top notch production by Atro. Her most polished release to date, the track is jam packed with empowered sexuality, with Princi deploying her characteristic machine gun lyricism with ease as she tells prospective suitors to “slow it down” and “no need to be greasy”. Part of the Harmony From A Dominant Hue debut compilation release from FBi Radio show turned record label Body Promise which also features choice contributions from Rainbow Chan’s side project Chunyin as well as Collarbones and BV singer Marcus Whale’s new production project Marcus (Not Singing), the comp is a best of local boundary-pushing artists and is well worth the paltry $8.00./ Michael Carr/ Contributor
