Julia Jacklin – ‘Eastwick’
Julia Jacklin just has one of those voices. Not only is it instantly recognisable, her tone alone does most of the talking, expressing with just a few inflections a whole host of emotions and experiences. Surprise new track ‘Eastwick’ lives somewhere between malaise and ennui on the induced emotions scale – all the saddest, prettiest feelings are French you see.
Like her debut album Don’t Let the Kids Win, the slow-burning song sees Jacklin poetically reflecting on the passage of time and growing up, but here she’s also ruminating on the perils of our hyper-reality TV culture, the track apparently inspired by watching Dancing With The Stars. “It might make for good TV, grieving process for all to see/ But I don’t want my father’s ashes scattered over strangers’ couches,” she sings.
Eastwick’s accompanying video is just as captivating. Sporting a kind of Sofia Coppola meets the Blue Mountains vibe, the clip stars a blue cocktail wielding, tropical-outfit wearing Jacklin meandering her way through mundane suburban life while her hapless companion (played by Jacklin’s bassist Harrison Fuller) yaps away unwittingly. Haven’t we all been there? Jacklin’s new 7” Eastwick/Cold Caller will be released on Friday 15th September. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor
The Sea Gypsies – ‘Demons’
There’s nothing demonic about Coastie crew The Sea Gypsies’ new sun-drenched indie rock hymn ‘Demons’. The five piece’s newby is a hypnotic wash of verby guitars, soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics wrapped up in a chill funk groove that’ll lap gently at your aching spirit like cool rock pool waves. Keep an eye out for the official music video dropping next week. / Emmy Mack, Staff Writer

Nosaj Thing – ‘All Points Back To U (Feat. Steve Spacek)’
LA producer Nosaj Thing (real name Jason Chung) returned this week, with the first single from his upcoming fourth album, Parallels.
‘All Points Back To U’ immediately caught my eye ear with its warm analogue synths and cold drum machine, all dotted with vocals from Australian-based artist Steve Spacek.
The contrast between warm and cold also appears to be something that’s made its way through the rest of Parallels, in spaces where Chung has combined different electronic textures.
“My previous records reflected the anxiety of living inside my own imagination,” he says. “For Parallels, I went outside of that: it’s all about trying new things, creating new worlds.
“In the past year, I faced up to my own internal struggles & became more social. This allowed me to jump styles & genres — exploring different emotions and sounds beyond what I’d done before. I’d make something ambient and cinematic, and then create a dancefloor beat, along with a broken hip-hop groove — and then try to make them work together.”
Parallels is out on Friday, 8th September. / Tom Williams, News Editor
Demonatrix — ‘Amazing Discgrace’
A new goth rock collective has risen from the depths of Sydney’s putrid underbelly and announced themselves upon the world with a ghoulish debut single. Corpse-painted all-star collective Demonatrix’s virgin offering ‘Amazing Disgrace’ (cwottheydidthere?) is an industrial-laced anthem that combines a modern-edged dual-vocal assault with blazing eighties-flavoured guitars. And, like Frankenstein’s monster, it’s been brought to nightmarish life via a darkly psychedelic music video shot and edited by Anthony Ash Brennan.
Check out the clip for ‘Amazing Disgrace’ below and you can catch the band performing live at Sydney’s Aftershock festival on June 24th and supporting US nu-metal veterans Trapt in Melbourne on July 6th. / Emmy Mack, Staff Writer
