Music Feeds Faves – 23/10/15

Each week the Music Feeds team hunt down their favourite new tunes, bundle them up in some (often highly legible) words and bring them to you. It’s Music Feeds Faves.

Thomas William – Sleepwalk

I’ve been listening to heaps of Burial recently (weird choice considering all the sunny weather recently I know) and so I am absolutely loving the latest from Plastic World’s Thomas William, Sleepwalk. Not for the faint of heart, this gurgling bass heavy track throbs with a percussive energy that’s not quite UK Garage, not quite Bergain techno, but totally baddass.

Having been around for ages playing under a suite of pseudonyms including Kleptokleptics and T. Morimoto, William can osscilate with the best of them and I can’t wait to hear more. / Mike Carr, Staff Writer

Set Mo – Chasing Forever

There’s always going to be a little bit of pressure when you have to follow-up a song like White Dress that garnered over one million plays on Spotify but Sydney duo Set Mo have done a cranking job. Chasing Forever is the new tune and it features the brilliant vocals of soul singer ALPHAMAMA who tears it up on this tune.

It’s a ’90s-leaning deep house tune with a chorus that will soundtrack a sun-soaked summer. It’s an unabashed piece of joy which, even though it sounds effortless, is often hard to create without sounding lame. They’ve really smashed it out of the park with this one and I’ll be surprised if it’s not flooding from every car stereo by the time summer is in full swing. / Sam Murphy, Staff Writer

Kirin J Callinan – The Teacher

Kirin has FINALLY returned with a new life lesson or two, which is fantastic because it’s been a while between classes. The Teacher is the first track to be shared from his forthcoming second album, and its six-and-a-half minutes of loungey musings on teacher-student relationships are dripping in his creepy-yet-hypnotising persona.

Featuring Kirin’s good m9 Connan Mockasin, The Teacher has got it all: strings, piano, crooning, and the obligatory references to cumming, cricket and the school playground.

Kirin’s as-yet-untitled follow-up to his stunning 2013 debut Embracism is due in 2016, and apparently features contributions from his pal Mark Ronson. Until then, sit up straight and take notes. / Tom Williams, Staff Writer

Troye Sivan – Talk Me Down

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you ignore Perth musician Troye Sivan for any reason, you’re a bit of a fucken idiot. The dude is unleashing the full glorious wrath of his multi-media empire, with 2015 seeing him push the musical element of it to the fore, much to the benefit of mankind.

Talk Me Down is his latest single of sorts and also the conclusion to his Blue Neighbourhood music video trilogy, which is also the name of his upcoming debut LP, which will include some songs from his just released WILD EP. Yes, it’s confusing if you’re not a 15-year-old girl on Twitter (or me), but trust me when I say getting involved with Troye Boy is a must right now.

Pulling back on the reins after the much boppier Wild and Fools, Talk Me Down is a moodier ballad with Troye poetically pining for a distant partner surrounded by low-key orchestral flourishes and a subdued, yet driving percussive beat. The bloody beautiful video hits the feels as expected, concluding the star-crossed lover’s story with an ambiguous yet heavy-hitting emotional conclusion.

Lily & The Bellows – White Lies

If you’re not already across Sydney outfit Lily & The Bellows then pay attention because they’re about to become your favourite new purveyors of 1950s tinged soul pop.

Their new single, White Lies, is so boogie-inducing it’ll make you wanna throw down, grab a cherry soda with chocolate ice cream and make for that dace floor like a peachy keen jellybean, rockin’ an’ rollin’ an’ what not.

Yeah OK, all of that was from Grease.

The song though, is sort of Roy Orbison/ The Beach Boys meets Little Birdy, with its jangly guitars and airy vocals from singer Lily So, whose voice is so buttery that even when listening to her sing about the dark realities of chasing fame, fantasy and fading youth, you somehow still can’t help but want to cut a rug.

Tiger Choir – Interstate

One of my all round favourites, Tiger Choir, have hit us up with their new feel great track, Interstate. Think of waking up in a country Tasmanian landscape, combine it with some synths and funky guitar and put a bunch of singing sheep wearing aviators. That’s what you get.

Once again we hear vocalist, Elliot Taylor, giving us a combination of low Elvis baritone vox and dreamy falsetto, along with some catchy bah bah hooks. After their two previous singles Shani and All Time, we have now have the permission to say “GIMME GIMME YOUR ALBUM!”

Panic! At The Disco – Emperor’s New Clothes

If Brandon Urie rocked up to Stereosonic looking like this, there would be much more than just panic at the disco. Stringlet bros would most likely shit their britches and crush each other in a hysterical stampede to GTFO.

The Panic! At The Disco frontman is unrecognisable in the just-released music video for Emperor’s New Clothes, the latest single off the band’s 5th studio LP, Death Of A Bachelor.

The customarily babin’ frontman basically pulls an American Werewolf In London, morphing into a hideous nightmare-demon to bring the darkly schizophrenic tune to fear-vomity life.

Although the clip looks like something more akin to what an extreme metal band like Mayhem or Satyricon would bring out (and tbh it’s just crying out for an overdub) it’s probably the only thing visually epic enough to do justice to this absolute monster of a song, which merges elements of pop, dance, Nightmare Before Christmas-style showtune theatrics and an absolutely animal rock chorus into one pulverising anthem.

Bonus points for getting the decomposing skeletons to sing backing vox. / Emmy Mack, Staff Writer
