The Music Feeds team is ready to wax lyrical about tunes we’re digging and show how ~cool~ we are when dropping that new music knowledge. Here we’ve wrangled together the fresh new songs that made an impact on us these past few weeks, for the ultimate new music playlist. It’s Music Feeds Faves!
Guy Burns – ‘Two (feat. YSKA)’
Imagine a giant Ent man riding a sled through the Icelandic wilderness. A snow-siren hovers at the blades of his craft, her crystalline voice awakens him to the soft and saccharine. He swings a giant tree root at her, her fragile form is flattened on the face of a smooth boulder. This is ‘Two’, a beautiful ent-siren parlance.
This sweet little song ‘Two (feat. YSKA)’ features up and coming Sydney producer Guy Burns.
Following on from his debut single ‘No Rush’, ‘Two’ features singer YSKA and marks a movement into brighter, more vocal-driven territory. Drawing inspiration from Lykke Li, Bonobo, Tycho and Odesza, Guy rides the fine line between real and electronic, commercial and experimental. / Luke Bodley, Contributor
Burden Man – ‘Shadows Of The Dying’
Sydney: three weeks worth of wet weather is enough to leave anyone feeling a bit blue. Thankfully, a new artist has just emerged to help you process those bleak feelings of gloom and despair. Lone wolf singer-songwriter Burden Man casts a deep, dark shadow with his haunting debut ‘Shadows Of The Dying’. With stylishly eerie Neil Young-esque guitar work and a rumbling baritone that will send shivers down your spine, our first encounter with Burden Man is like a strangely soothing horror movie soundtrack, settling itself inside a shadowy niche carved out by other great tortured souls like Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Chelsea Wolfe.

Lupa J – Put Me Back Together
Lupa J is undoubtedly one of Australian’s most exciting emerging artists and her latest single Put Me Back Together solidifies that claim. Driven by glitchy, clever grooves the track is carried by a symphonic wave of melody, commanding vocals and punctuated by a subtle, pulsating beat. Think Eurythmics’ Annie Lennox meets Grimes.
The song is, in part, inspired by Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’, explains Lupa J, and aims to convey the liberation that comes with not just acceptance of, but rather, the embracing of “emotional instability.”
Lupa J says it best: “This song is about finding freedom in madness & emotional expression, a big middle finger to your boyfriend who gets all awkward & frustrated every time you start crying.”
If like me, you’re keen to see this unveil live, Lupa J will play a single launch show on Tuesday, April 11th at Newtown Social Club, as one of the venue’s last shows before it closes. / Nastassia Baroni, Managing Editor
Mid Ayr – ‘Pocket Her Eyes’
Mid Ayr are a duo, but they’re loud. The Brisbane pair of Hugh Middleton and Zac Moynihan have just backed up the success of last year’s single ‘Letting You In’ with an erratic newie called ‘Pocket Her Eyes’.
The track is something of a Radiohead & Two Door Cinema Club love child, full of scratched-up guitars and a mix that both pushes and pulls. But at its core, as Middleton says, is “an observational commentary on society turning sexual pursuits into a contest”.
‘Pocket Her Eyes’ will appear on Mid Ayr’s second EP Elm Way, which is due out on 21st April ahead of the duo’s first east coast headline tour. / Tom Williams / News Editor
Luke Million – ‘Back To The Rhythm’ feat. Sam Sparro
Dust off and lace up those neon pink roller blades, because Luke Million and Sam Sparro have just served up the perfect Xanadu-reminiscent, disco-loving jam. Seriously if you’re looking for a way to say see-you-later to the crappiness of the week gone by and roll into the weekend like a ’90s Power Ranger through Hyde Park, then this is for you.
Like its name suggests, ‘Back To The Rhythm’ is a feel-good, nostalgic throwback to good dance music, melding funky bass lines, synths, and Sparro’s soulful vocals. It’s also the lead single from Million’s forthcoming EP of the same name, so expect more of the same vibes!
