Music Feeds Podcast Episode #95: The Madden Brothers

Now formally known as The Madden Brothers, Joel and Benji Madden have shifted their sound as they prepare to release their new album, Greetings From California, which is set to drop on 12th September. The Madden boys, who rose to fame after forging Good Charlotte in their 15-year-old bedrooms, sat down to discuss the album for the latest episode of Music Feeds Podcast.

“It’s been awesome to have music out there again after the last four years. We went away to make music, so we’ve kind of been in this little bubble,” says Joel. “We’ve been in the studio for so long making this record. To finally let people hear it and to be able to talk about music is kind of a relief.”

The brothers started recording Greetings three years ago, but the idea of working together outside of Good Charlotte had been in the works for years. “We kinda had this appetite to do things musically we kinda felt like we couldn’t do,” they say, citing the restrictive music industry that they’ve been subjected to. “It’s really inevitable for any artist to get put in a box – that’s just how the world works.”

After releasing five albums under the Good Charlotte moniker, Joel and Benji, now in their 30s, have put the focus on the process behind their work. They insist their new album “wasn’t a business decision,” and that their platinum-certified new single, We Are Done, has even received support from old-school Good Charlotte fans, despite its marked shift towards ’70s pop-inspired tones.

This podcast served as a reconciliation of sorts, following the Music Feeds-led petition to get the Madden brothers out of Australia in 2013. “We were never a critic’s band, we were a fan’s band,” the boys admit. Fans will be able to see the band on their upcoming Australian tour this October.
