Polish Club Pen A+ Review Of Their Own Horny Gig, Drop Live Video For ‘Gimme Money’

Those funny gents at Polish Club keep coming up with consistently hilarious ways to entertain us, and today is no exception.

After performing a sold-out show in Melbourne with their ranks bolstered by the addition of a horn section, they’ve commemorated the landmark occasion by penning a gripping review of their horny debut at the Corner Hotel on July 7th, as well as releasing a live video of the track ‘Gimme Money’ from the performance.

The duo will be bringing the same show to Sydney this Saturday, but that one has already sold out as well, meaning the only way everyone who hasn’t already got tickets will be able to see Polish Club perform with horns is to watch the video below, or else for a blow-by-blow account (geddit?) read Novak’s hand-written review of the whole thing.

Enjoy.

Review: Polish Club ‘With Horns’ @ The Corner Hotel, Melbourne 07/07/18

By Novak from Polish Club

“Polish Club came with horns on Saturday night.” Judging by my & JH’s expressions on stage in front of a sold out Corner Hotel, that statement can be taken two ways…

Sweater Curse opened up the evening and killed it. The Brisbane trio slammed through their set and proved that Melbourne fans are sick and know to show up on time and see the opener because that’s some hot new shit.

All Our Exes Live In Texas were always going to be a risky band to play with, because you see, they’re very good. Like really, really great. So it’s always a bold move to juxtapose a group of professionals playing incredible music and being so goddamn charismatic whilst doing so, with a couple of dummies using too many expletives between two minute songs and struggling to read their “funny” set lists. What I’m trying to say is AOELIT are the best. There’s nothing better than four-part harmonies, and there might not be anything better than AOELIT.

Despite my self-deprecating, and mostly true self-reflective sentiments above, I think we nailed it. This is probably mostly due to the fact that we enlisted 5 professional horns players to back us up. Taking to the stage whilst the horns section blasted the intro to KC & The Sunshine Band’s ‘Give It Up’, we, Polish Club, managed to get through our very first song played with more than just two people. Considering it was not only with 7 people, but also a cover, I think we did pretty well. We were supposed to go straight into one of our own songs, but my sweaty fingers were struggling with my new fancy guitar and so I took a breather and JH introduced the band. At least that’s what I think he did, I can never understand him because he mumbles, and I also ask the monitor guy to turn his mic waaaay down on my foldbacks. We were flanked by Greg and what he called “something between a tuba and a sousaphone”, Will on trumpet, Mike on trombone, The Bone from Winston Surfshirt on another trombone and band leader Jim on Barry Sax. It was loud.

The set was a whirlwind of PC songs old and new-ish, including some rarer ones that we felt would lend themselves to the brass treatment, like ‘Major’, which included a surprise cover intro that I insisted no one would know, but I reckon I was wrong (I’ll keep that a surprise for the Sydney folk). Sorry everyone. I forgot to mention to the horns section that we tend to lose the ability to count in songs properly and tend to play about three times too fast when we play live. However I also forgot that these dudes are legit and didn’t miss a beat, when we launched into Beeping at the speed of light.

The only drawback of the night was our setlist. No, not the actual songs we chose to play, those were awesome. I’m talking about the physical ‘setlist’ that JH decided to write on two side of see-through plastic. But I’m a trooper and powered through. We finished the night with an encore cover from the 90’s. Again I don’t really want to spoil it for the Sydney people. Suffice to say it was very SPICY, with AOELIT joining us and impressively knowing all the dance moves from the music vid.

The whole horns thing worked really well. Our manager said it was “LOOSE”, but he said it with a smile on his face, so I think that was a good thing. The fast songs were elevated to another level we didn’t know existed and the slow jams were stripped right back, often with just my lovely voice and horns. Suffice to say, the experiment was totally worth it, and that’s coming from the two dummies who decided to blow all their band money on brass, cuz why the fuck not?

Overall, it was probably the most fun gig ever, like for any band ever. But don’t take it from me. Don’t take it at all. Whatever, I don’t care. I had fun. Okay, bye.
