Coast & Ocean is the project of songwriter Alex Johnson, who draws on elements of R&B, hip-hop and soul to craft his hazy, surf-tinged sound.
His blissed out new single ‘LOST’, which we’re premiering here at Music Feeds before it officially lands tomorrow, 20th April, coalesces all those influences. The result is a laid-back, breezy cut that feels like an ideal antidote to the colder weather on the horizon. Trappy percussion and chill, understated guitars make up the backbone of the song, with Johnson’s free-flowing delivery gliding above.
“I feel like ‘LOST’ is at heart about discovering new places, through the eyes of a child,” Johnson tells Music Feeds, reflecting on his time spent touring throughout Europe.
Johnson, who has previously performed on bills alongside the likes of Ty Dolla $ign, Hot Potato Band, Lyall Moloney and Lime Cordiale, says he wrote ‘LOST’ shortly after coming off a 250-date, 11-month tour throughout Europe, South East Asia, New Zealand and Australia.
“I was playing shows, playing festivals and busking a lot. Living the life as a new established artist, I remember how exciting and empowering that feeling was. I was lost in adventure, happiness, and touring wherever I wanted… I wanted to give a new positive meaning to being lost and what it means to discover yourself. If you are living your passion the world is yours.”
‘LOST’ was recorded with Minimal Miggy, after the producer saw Johnson performing the song as part of a freestyle night a couple of years ago, shortly after the rapper had returned from his second jaunt across Europe. “Two years later with a third European tour under my belt, from a little home studio in Byron Bay, ‘LOST’ was recorded.”
‘LOST’ arrives after a string of singles by Johnson under the Coast & Ocean moniker over the last couple of years, following up 2020’s ‘Valentino’, ‘Golden’ and ‘Peaches n Cream’.
