We live in divisive times. Politically, economically, socially, racially, religiously: we are bombarded with messages of what separates us, what makes us different from each other. Or rather, what makes others different from us. Music, though, is a uniting force. Its power is its ability to resist those divisive messages and remind us of the things that bond us, the power we have as a collective. That’s the message New Zealand artist Hollie Smith conveys in her new song ‘Poor on Poor’.
“I wrote this song while I was frustrated with the political climate in NZ at the time,” explains Smith. “Within this current landscape in which we live, government still does not define us. We can help our communities grow, We can stop hatred, bigotry and racism. We can change the attitude we create as a society.”
That might sound like an ambitious undertaking, but, as expressed in the song’s accompanying video, it’s one we all work towards every day through small acts of kindness and compassion. The joyous visuals for the powerful song show Hollie Smith and her bandmates in action on their 2016 national tour, and the joy they emit, and in turn receive, from performing live is very much apparent.
