Today, we’re premiering Perth band Mal de Mer’s new song ‘Mirage’, a bright, infectious indie-pop cut lifted from the sextet’s forthcoming EP Sanguine, which arrives in full next month.
Foregrounded by smooth, shimmering textures, it’s a buoyant earworm that shines with warm guitars, glistening keys, groove-heavy rhythms and singer Saskia Fleming’s distinctive, striking vocals as she sends a kiss-off to a relationship well past its use-by date. “It’s bizarre I made it so far, two years with you felt like ten in the dark,” Fleming sings. “So I left, looked bereft, you said go right so I veered left.”
As Fleming explains, the song is a “nonchalant narration of leaving someone that you should have left a long time ago. To me, this song feels like a shower argument – you get to speak your truth, uninterrupted, and finally put that person in their place.”
‘Mirage’ arrives alongside a a surrealistic video directed by Sarah Gelmi that Fleming describes as “a satirical send up of leaving a crappy relationship” that “taps into the joy of moving on and looking back with relief.” Watch that below.
Mal de Mer’s forthcoming EP Sanguine broadens the themes explored on ‘Mirage’, which Fleming calling it a body of work that “follows the disorienting journey out of a toxic situation, and the metamorphosis that takes place afterwards.” That arrives Friday, 8th July.
