PREMIERE: Watch the Enchanting Video for Parvyn’s ‘Irkha’

Melbourne-based vocalist Parvyn released ‘Irkha’ last year, a highlight from the Bombay Royale singer’s debut solo album Sa. It’s a searing, slow-burning meditation on jealousy foregrounded by lush textures and electronic percussion. Today, we’re premiering the music video for ‘Irkha’ ahead of its official release tomorrow (Friday, 1st July).

Directed by Sana Panghal and filmed at Melbourne’s Thornbury Theatre, the cinematic short film stars Parvyn herself and echoes the song’s sentiments. The action takes place at a formal social gathering where things aren’t quite what they seem, and a dramatic narrative gradually unfolds. It’s a visually stunning clip that perfectly accompanies the tension and release of the song.

“Whether it is a formal dinner/dance event or at the back of the Gurdwara (Sikh temple), there is often a culture of gossip that plagues our society,” Parvyn says of the accompanying clip.

For Parvyn, the music video also presented a prime opportunity to collaborate with other creatives, including cinematographer Ayuka Shirao and fashion designer Lokesh Kashyap, whose original garments feature in the video for ‘Irkha’.

“I wish to never be jealous of anyone nor do I wish for anyone to ever be jealous of me,” Parvyn said. “Often women betray each other and I am calling that out. We are sisters, and should be there to whole-heartedly support and celebrate each other without judgement or jealousy.”

Parvyn will celebrate the ‘Irkha’ video with a live show at Melbourne’s Brunswick Ballroom on Friday, 15th July. Find details and tickets here.
