Gold Coast garage-pop rockers Bleeding Knees Club are back and poised to dominate your playlists once more, today premiering their brand new EP, Chew The Gum, which is now streaming in full by yours truly.
The four track record is a burst of trademark, raucously fun Bleeding Knees Club energy, brimming with sunny, scuzzy guitars, wild drums and frontman Alex Wall’s knack for candid and catchy lyrics.
“I was trying to write songs that had no boring, ‘waste of time’ parts,” Wall tells Music Feeds. “They don’t really even have bridges. I wanted to write super fun, right-to-the-point tunes that would be good to thrash out live.”
Chew The Gum sees Wall return to his BKC roots after some time overseas and working on other projects, including his solo pursuit Wax Witches. All four tracks on the EP were produced by John Patterson of The Grates who Wall says was perfect for the task.
“I was excited to have John do the EP because The Grates’ music is really really pop, but it’s also just super raw. Just good guitar sounds and strong choruses. They sound like a real band, not over-produced and insincere. And that’s what I wanted to have us sounding like.
“Also Richie from The Grates played drums on the EP and nailed it. Shout out to Richie.”
Since BKC co-founder Jordan Malane stepped away from the band, new members Michael Barker (guitar), Gio Alexander (bass) and Nick Leighton (drums) have come on board, infusing the band with a whole new sense of energy, evident in this new EP.
“Having a second guitarist has given me so much more freedom when writing songs,” explains Wall. “It gets boring to write for just one guitar after a while.
“I think the Chew The Gum EP is a really good mix of what people liked about BKC originally, and where we’re heading next. It’s pretty solid.”
Bleeding Knees Club will be taking the new EP across the country this May and June on their newly-announced national tour. Give Chew The Gum a spin here below and check out tour dates and details.
