Jessie Smith talks to Johnny Darko about Britpop!
Who the fuck are YOU?
I am an indie DJ. I make noise with others people’s work. I also run an indie night called Britpop!. (I was gonna write a short bio here, but it would just make me sound like a total dick. So…yeah, “indie DJ” will suffice.)
What the hell is Britpop!?
As it says on the tin, it’s a night of pure BRITISH INDIE. I think I have a very UK-centric take on what an indie night should be: totally cool songs with guitars, the odd pop classic and absolutely no tongue-in-cheek-so-bad-it’s-good nonsense. No hip hop. No electro. The Britpop! DJs – myself, Tom Libertine and Johnny Segment – play only indie classics and rad new chunks of awesomeness. Occasionally we drop a Mighty Boosh tune.
When does it all go down?
The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month. One of which is usually a Britpop! “special” focussing on a particular classic British band or artist. So far in 2008 we’ve done The Cure, The Smiths and an Oasis vs Pulp vs Blur night that went off the hizza. I’m gonna do some serious crate digging for the David Bowie special on 20th September.
Where?
The Abercrombie Hotel, a unique and somewhat infamous venue that has it in spades: couches, a heated courtyard, cheap drinks and a fully hectose house party atmosphere. ‘Nuff said really.
You can catch DJ Johnny Darko and Britpop! every 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturday of each month.
