Sublime (incl. Bradley and No Doubt) – Vans Warped Tour 1995
BRINGING IT BACK
In recent years in Australia, Soundwave festival has somewhat filled the void left by Warped. Soundwave has featured many of the same bands billed on the Warped Tour, along with bands you wouldn’t see within 100kms of a Warped event, including Slayer, Anthrax, Iron Maiden and Metallica.
Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah has teamed up with Kevin Lyman to bring Warped back to Australia at the end of 2013. Maddah announced the locations for the tour over Twitter, with stops in Brisbane (29th November), Coffs Harbour (30th November), Sydney (1st December), Canberra (6th December), Melbourne (7th December), and Adelaide (8th December). Little else is known about the Australian run of Warped 2013 but it has been confirmed that there will be no sideshows, keeping focus on the main event.
Difficulty with state legislation regarding all-ages events and a lack of popularity means there won’t be a stop in Perth. Said Maddah:
“To be quite frank, the past few years Perth hasn’t been particularly kind to punk bands or to punk events…I had a bill of Panic! At The Disco, All Time Low, Yellowcard and somebody else [at Counter Revolution mini festival] that couldn’t sell 1000 tickets in Perth.”
Maddah has stated that the 2013 Australian tour will serve as a supplement to Soundwave, saying, “Warped is about mayhem & DIY punk rock spirit. [Soundwave] is about delivering a slick & orchestrated day of performances.” Maddah has previously stated that “Soundwave is an international festival. We book international bands.” This could mean that the 2013 Warped Tour will feature more local talent than the US tour.
Maddah has been enthusiastic about the upcoming tour and of his partnership with Lyman. He recently tweeted, “Kevin Lyman IS Warped and always the man to thank. I’m just privileged to assist him.”
