Tomorrow's People Festival Acts Tell Us About The First Ever Gig They Attended

Brand new all-ages mini-festival Tomorrow’s People kicks off its debut run around the country next week, bringing up and comers Dylan Joel, E^ST, Kilter and UV Boi to the nations frothing youngsters. Alcohol free and aimed at Under-18s, Tomorrow’s People may well be the first ever gig for some brand new punters, and with that in mind we got the four headliners to regale us with the tale of their first ever gig. Check out the dates and deets for the mini-fest below!

Dylan Joel

The very first gig I ever went to was actually an all-age charity gig, entirely student run, but backed by two organisations called ‘Make Poverty History’ and ‘Oaktree Foundation’. The gig was created to spread awareness of world poverty and the importance of international aid. Bliss N Eso were headlining the event and due to some older friends of mine being heavily involved in the gig, I actually landed the role of MC-ing the show.

I was 15 and had no idea what I was doing. I met the all 3 of the Bliss N Eso boys, interviewed them so I had some material to introduce them with and then watched from side of stage. That night actually played one of the biggest roles in my music journey, as it was the night I became hooked on hip hop.. I watched BnE get an entire crowd to repeatedly chant “peace, love and unity” and I saw something about the hip hop movement that I’d never seen before. The next day I wrote my first song.

E^ST

The first gig I attended was a Paramore show with Relient K supporting. I don’t remember where they played, but I have a feeling it was at the Sydney Entertainment Centre (now the Quantas Credit Union Arena). I remember being very inspired by Hayley Williams, her vocal ability and stage presence just blew my mind. I was lucky enough to head backstage after the show and had a chat to the band, which was very dreamy for 12-year old me haha.

Kilter

My first show was as a fresh faced 19 yr old in May 2011 in a sick little bar called Tone in Sydney. Pretty sure it’s a Greek restaurant now but back then they used to put on some real cool niche electronic gigs. Actually, I think it’s the spot where Soda Factory is…

If I remember right this particular gig was put on by Life Aquatic and East To West, two music blogs, and had myself, Elizabeth Rose, Fishing and Alba on the bill.

I was nervous as hell being the opening act but managed to bash my way through a weird live beats set on a Roland 404sx and a MicroKorg I didn’t own. I think it went okay.

UV Boi

I can’t remember the first show I attended. One of my most memorable and favourite shows ever was BADBADNOTGOOD in Melbourne at the end of 2014. It was soooo tight because BBNG has been my favourite band since I was in 10th grade. We spoke on twitter a few days before the show and I met them backstage (fanboyed so much lol) but they were so cool and nice about it and now we’re friends… I still can’t believe it.
