The Tivoli was buzzing with excitement for The Amity Affliction’s second sold-out show of their Fuck The Reaper tour with Asking Alexandria and Skyway, with local support Driven Fear. The line out the front of the Tivoli stretched the length of the street full of fans showing off their band merchandise t-shirts.
Many arrived early for local act Driven Fear who clearly have a bit of a following around Brisbane, to no surprise as they played a tight set and set up what was to be a great night of music.
Following were Gold Coast pop-punk band, Skyway. Skyway managed to get the audience moving as I started seeing some swinging arms and legs at the front of the room.
There’s no doubt much of the crowd at the Tivoli tonight were here to see Asking Alexandria, as the venue was filled to its limits by the time their set began. The energy from this English 5 piece was off the scales. They punched out a 7-song set, which included tracks from both their first album Stand Up & Scream and their latest Reckless & Relentless. Tracks included Closure, Not the American Average, Morte El Dabo and crowd favourite Breathless, which absolutely was the set highlight.
From the moment The Amity Affliction walked on stage, they owned it. Opening with RIP Foghorn, they chose tracks mostly from their most recent LP Youngbloods to fill their set, with only 2 from their earlier LP Severed Ties, and no earlier tracks. Their set felt like it went super fast with the crowd relishing every key hit, guitar strum, drum kick and scream – each moment captivated – and The Amity Affliction thrived on the crowd energy at the Tivoli. Coming off a sold-out show the previous night seemed to have the band feeling pumped in their home state. Amity punched out their set hitting every part with ease, filling between-song time with guitar interludes. The best came last with the highlight of the night being their 2 track encore consisting of Anchors and I Hate Hartley, which really showed this band is right up there with the international bands when it comes to live shows.
