Dan Sultan w/ Gin Wigmore, Manning Bar – 22nd May, 2010

The delightful Gin Wigmore casually walked out with her band to minimal fuss and almost unknown to the crowd. But once she started singing, we all took notice. Her nasally, cheeky vocal echoed throughout the Manning Bar. Returning home after some time in the States, Gin clearly loved her homecoming and put on a great show. She was fun, energetic, engaging and if it wasn’t for the main act, we wouldn’t have wanted her to leave.

Dan Sultan certainly is the man of the moment. His growing popularity is a result of a great album in Get Out While You Can, his grounded down-to-earth attitude and a great live show. He owns the stage like all great singers in the past have commanded that small space in front of the crowd. With a mix of Elvis swagger and Springsteen cool, Dan Sultan knows how to get your feet moving, hands clapping and hips swaying with a mixture of 60’s rockabilly and blues. Dan and his band kept the songs flowing for two hours, never showing signs of ever wanting to leave the stage. Between every song there were jokes with band members and friends in the crowd and a constant laughter that helped set the mood.

The impressive thing about Dan Sultan is his music. He can scream like a rocker and swoon like a crooner; he play a blistering guitar solo and jam it out with the best of them. As the year continues on, he will be a even greater performer. Well worth spending your dollars on next time he hits Sydney.
