5 Seconds Of Summer Declared ‘Worst Band’ By NME

Aussie “pop-punk” band 5 Seconds Of Summer have joined Foo Fighters, Kasabian and Jake Bugg in taking home a gong at the 2015 NME Awards, although the title of the award may not be too much of a cause for celebration.

The awards, which took place in London on Wednesday, saw the boys handed the honour of “worst band” beating out competitors Bastille, Blink-182, One Direction, U2 and the defending champions, The 1975.

Understandably the band weren’t there to collect their award but they have since shown their appreciation on social media. 5SOS shared a screenshot of NME’s article declaring them the “worst band” which was retweeted 36,000 times and met with comments like, “im actually more proud of this than if you won a grammy tbh” and “told you guys your band sucks”.

The band’s guitarist Michael Clifford also tweeted, “Won the NME worst band award. I’m so damn happy right now. thx to everyone who voted #dreamcomingtrue.” In fact, he even actively campaigned for the award, appealing to fans last year to vote for them in the hallowed category.

“HOLY SHIT WE GOT NOMINATED FOR WORST BAND AT THE NME AWARDS,” he tweeted. “pls pls pls vote. I’m not even being sarcastic it would be so incredible to win.”

5 Seconds of Summer now join a distinguished list of past recipients of the award including Oasis, Nickelback, One Direction, Dave Matthews Band and last year’s winner, The 1975.

The award will now sit upon the band’s mantlepiece with previous accolades including a 2015 People’s Choice Award for Favourite Breakout Artist and a 2014 Song of the Year ARIA Award for She Looks So Perfect.
