INXS legend Michael Hutchence will be immortalised forever in statue form in Melbourne.
City of Yarra mayor Danae Bosler has spilled the beans to Fairfax, revealing his council has been working with the iconic frontman’s family, and “look forward to exploring this opportunity” in 2019.
“Michael Hutchence is a true Australian music legend, and it’s a compliment his family has looked to the City of Yarra as the home for his statue,” Bosler tells The Age.
“The City of Yarra has a proud history of cultivating and championing local music, and is the home to some of Australia’s top live music venues, so we’re especially honoured his family saw Yarra as a good fit.”
The site for the statue is expected to be close to the newly unveiled bronze statue of fellow Aussie rock icon Molly Meldrum, near The Corner Hotel.
Sarah McLeod from The Superjesus, who was among those who lobbied the council for a Hutchence statue, tells the paper: “As a country, we glorify our sporting heroes no end but we don’t give hardly enough kudos to our musical legacy…
“The wonderful statue that we have there in Richmond of Molly Meldrum should be just the beginning. We have a lot to celebrate and Michael is the perfect addition to the family.”
This great news will be much to the chagrin of Hutchence fans in his home city of Sydney, where a campaign to erect a statue in the rockstar’s honour has been ongoing for years to no avail.
