Former Ween frontman Aaron Freeman (Gene Ween) has released a new song titled Genene, the lyrics of which have started up rumours that the 42-year-old musician is undergoing gender altering treatment.
The story originates from Hidden Track, who contacted Freeman after the solo artist posted Genene on his SoundCloud profile. Apparently, Hidden Track reached Freeman while in a Belgium hospital, where the singer/songwriter is receiving “a transformative procedure”.
In regards to Genene, Freeman reportedly told Hidden Track that the song was deliberately written to be open to interpretation and is an honest reflection of his current stage in life.
“This song is left to interpretation on purpose. To me it’s just an honest song about where I’m at, creepy, real and pretty, just the way I like it,” Freeman told Hidden Track. “On one hand it’s about change and acceptance on a personal, spiritual level but can obviously be interpreted literally as a sex change.”
If reports are accurate, it would be the second high profile male singer to undergo a sex change this year. Earlier in 2012 Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace (formerly Tom Gabel) publicly announced that she is transgender.
Genene contains the following opening lyric:
Genene, wake up and see the day / The operation’s through, we’re so very proud of you / Genene, the transformation’s done, you’re truly born again.
