The 2022 Grammy nominations have attracted their fair share of hot takes from artists, both nominated and excluded, and now ABBA has weighed in with some strong, self-indulgent points.
The Swedes released their surprise new LP Voyage earlier this year, and as such are nominated in the ‘Record Of The Year ‘ Category – no mean feat given it’s been 40 years between drinks.
This fact wasn’t lost on the pop darlings, who have been fashionably late to acknowledge the nomination, only taking to Twitter this week to speak on the nod.
“A Grammy should be mandatory for those who dare leave 40 years between album releases,” they wrote, in a statement provided to Variety.
“We suggest a new category.” It was signed: “ABBA / Agnetha, Björn, Benny, Anni-Frid.”
It’s some classic Scandinvain humor from the group, who caused a sensation when they announced all the way back in 2018 that there was new music on the way.
Voyage has gone on to become the band’s highest-charting release in the US, with mixed critical reception.
Their 2022 Grammy nomination is, incredibly, the first time they’ve earned a nod from The Academy.
