Back in May, Swedish pop icons ABBA revealed they were planning to release their first new music since 1982 sometime this year. However, as with so many things in this cursed, cursed 2020, the band are now reportedly set to release five new songs next year, after the coronavirus pandemic pushed back their initial release date – right around now – back.
The news comes from radio presenter and podcast host Geoff Lloyd, who says he recently interviewed the band’s Björn Ulvaeus.
“They’ve recorded five new songs,” Lloyd told The Independent. “Because of technical difficulties and the pandemic, it’s delayed things. But he promised me that the new ABBA music will be out in 2021.”
This batch of songs were recorded in 2018 when the band – who formed back in 1972 – re-entered the studio together for the first time in 35 years.
“We all four felt that, after some 35 years, it could be fun to join forces again and go into the studio,” the legends commented at the time. “And it was like time stood still.”
According to Lloyd, the new songs run the gamut from a “very danceable” pop tune to “Nordic sad, but happy at the same time.” Sounds bloody great to us – gimme, gimme, gimme.
