Alex Turner Says The New Arctic Monkeys Record Reminds Him Of Their Debut

Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner has compared the band’s freshly released record Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino to their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.

The new record has proved divisive as it’s a shift in sound from the band’s arena-ready last album AM but Turner reckons there’s hints of the band’s earlier work in there.

Asked by NME whether he can see the similarities between the lyrics of the latest album and their debut, Turner replied, “Absolutely I do, absolutely.”

“I can’t put my finger on exactly why I think that, but I have been saying it a lot recently.”

While he said, “It’s set in a completely different place,” he argued, “there’s something in the lyrics that reminds me of something in that writing.”

“I’m tempted to say that it’s something to do with how blunt it is. I think that was something I was trying to get away from, and perhaps I’ve returned to it now.”

Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino arrived yesterday. The band didn’t release any singles before the album dropped which is the first time they’ve done that.

Yesterday they debuted a song from the record ‘Four Our Of Five’ on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.
