Super-producer M-Phazes has recruited fellow Aussie muso Alison Wonderland to release Messiah, the first single from his comeback record.
M-Phazes’ next album will be his first since 2010’s Good Gracious, and Messiah sees the Gold Coast producer tread into Wonderland’s world of hard-hitting electro. The darker, percussion-driven timbres in Messiah signify a distinct move away from the hip hop style that M-Phazes has made his own over the years.
He told triple j‘s Richard Kingsmill the forthcoming new album will be a conscious new direction for his music.
“I’ve grown a lot as a producer and particularly as a songwriter so I think it’s a pretty big departure from the last record,” he said.
“It’s hard to escape the sound that I’m accustomed to making and that’s the hip-hop: the drums being loud and the mix being in your face but as far as the actual genre of the music, it’s pretty far removed the hip-hop style that I’m known for.”
M-Phazes also revealed that there’ll be a number of Aussie and international collaborators featured on the album, but refused to give away any more than that.
M-Phazes is well-known for his work with Bliss n Eso, Eskimo Joe and Daniel Johns, and more recently with Amy Shark on Adore and with Illy on his ARIA-nominated track Papercuts. During his triple j interview, he also said he’s planning on doing further work with both Amy Shark and Illy in 2017.
