A group of Oscar-winning producers are teaming up with Universal Music Group to create yet another documentary about the life of late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence.
As Billboard reports, Passion Pictures — the team behind the impressive Rodriguez doco Searching For Sugar Man — are producing a feature-length documentary film about Hutchence, whose life is already set to be the subject of a documentary by Sydney entrepreneur Ron Creevey, which will reportedly featured unreleased music from Hutchence.
Passion Pictures’ newly-announced Hutchence documentary will be directed by Aussie filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, who has worked with INXS in the past, including on the music video for What You Need. He says the project will be the “definitive documentary film” about Hutchence, who he describes as “complex, shy, poetic and exceptionally charismatic”.
“To be able to embark on this film now with such great partners as UMG, UK’s Passion Pictures, Ghost Pictures, [longtime INXS manager] Chris [Murphy] and INXS is extremely exciting and I know that together we are going to tell this story like no one else can,” Lowenstein says.
Passion Pictures’ John Battsek says the team values having the blessing of those close to Hutchence. “To know we have access to everyone and everything required to make such a film and the full support of UMG just reaffirms to us all that we can tell this story in the truest and most authentic way possible,” he says.
Passion Pictures’ documentary film about Hutchence is expected to be released in theatres at the end of 2017.
Aside from Passion Pictures’ documentary and Creevey’s documentary, Hutchence has also previously been portrayed in the Australian television mini-series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. INXS are also transforming their discography and story into INXS The Musical, which is set to open in Sydney in 2017.
