Legendary Brisbane rock band The Saints are set to be honoured with a new mural and a live music event in their home city, Queensland Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk announced at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND conference today.
In a statement, Ms Palaszczuk says, “The Saints changed the face of rock music worldwide but also showed that a Queensland band could have a big impact on the world stage.
“That’s why I was proud to announce at BIGSOUND today that 40 years since the release of their ground-breaking first album [(I’m) Stranded], we’re honouring them with a mural at Roma Street and a new live music event.”
The mural and its accompanying concert are being developed by former Go-Betweens member John Willsteed, who has marked out a location for the mural “on the north side of Upper Roma St, close to The Saints’ original practice room, share house and live music venue at 4 Petrie Terrace, known as Club 76”.
The new live music event in honour of The Saints will see former band member Ed Kuepper “reimagine” song from the band’s first three albums — 1977’s (I’m) Stranded, 1978’s Eternally Yours and 1978’s Prehistoric Sounds — Willsteed says.
The mural and live music event will cost over $60,000.
