ARIA have unveiled their lists of the best selling singles and albums of 2014 in Australia with works by many home-grown artists such as Sheppard, INXS, Hilltop Hoods, Chet Faker and Sia named amongst the best selling music of the past year.
Brisbane indie pop outfit Sheppard had the most popular song by an Australian act with Geronimo named as the fourth most popular song of 2014 in Australia. It landed behind Pharrell Williams’ Happy, Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass and Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off.
A number of other home-grown acts were also named in the top 20 best selling singles including Justice Crew’s Que Sera which came in at 5, Sia’s Chandelier at 6, Iggy Azalea’s Fancy at 13 and 5 Seconds of Summer’s She Looks Perfect at 20.
Ed Sheeran’s X was the biggest selling album of 2014 in Australia, ahead of Taylor Swift’s 1989 and the ubiquitous Frozen soundtrack. INXS’s The Very Best was the best selling album by an Australian act according to ARIA, coming in at fourth on the list.
Seven of the top 20 best selling albums in 2014 were Australian acts, including Hilltop Hoods (9), Human Nature (10), 5 Seconds Of Summer (11), Chet Faker (12), AC/DC (13) and Jimmy Barnes (19). Of the top 100 albums, 36 were by Australian acts, which according to Fairfax, is nine more than the past two years.
Just missing the cut at number 21 was triple j’s Like A Version Volume 10 compilation, which was the 21st best selling record of 2014. See the top 20 lists below and head to ARIA for the complete list.
