An American music festival dubbed “the world’s premiere showcase of psychadelic rock” is apparently spreading its wings and coming to Australia in 2013.
In an interview with Music Feeds at the Sydney leg of the Harvest Festival on the weekend, Alex Maas – frontman of the Austin-based band Black Angels – revealed his plans to bring their festival – Austin Psych Fest – to Melbourne next year.
According to its official website, Austin Psych Fest was founded in 2008 “to celebrate Austin’s musical history as the birthplace of psychedelic rock through the creation of a music and arts festival.” Like all start-ups, it has “grown from a small word-of-mouth event to an internationally acclaimed, full weekend event that attracts attendees from all over the world.”
The 2013 version of the Austin Psych Fest has already been announced – with The Black Angels enlisting Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Deerhunter, Spectrum and many others on the bill. The Austin event will take place from April 26-28.
It’s not 100 per cent clear, but Maas has indicated that some Australian acts could also be performing at the local version of the event, naming Tame Impala, Peaches and Ride Into the Sun as bands that he’s interested in.
