Cronulla venue Sting Bar has cancelled a planned Australian Music Week live music showcase tonight that was to feature seven local bands, over fears the show would breach noise limits.
On their Facebook page Sting Bar announced the cancellation of their Australian Music Week night, citing issues with the “noise polution [sic] of the bands”.
Some angry bands scheduled to take part in the showcase have taken to Facebook to vent their frustrations over the decision, criticising the venue for replacing the lineup of live bands with a lineup of DJs instead.
“Our Australian Music Week industry showcase tonight has been canned due to a typically Australian stance on live music,” announced The Ruckus on their Facebook page. “Apparently Sting Bar Cronulla would prefer the company of DJ’s and have decided to cancel all bands last minute.”
Their announcement was echoed by fellow Sydney outfit The Lockhearts. “Sorry to say we’ve withdrawn from Australian Music Week and will no longer be playing Sting Bar tonight due to the venue’s lack of support for any live music louder than a ukulele band, returning to their former glory with the finest dingers and DJs the shire has to offer.”
The venue elaborated on their decision to can the event in response to The Lockhearts’ post, saying that the showcase should not have been held at Sting Bar in the first place, given the noise restrictions in place there.
“We told [Australian Music Week organisers] they had to run everything through out System. The system they put in was just way over the top. If council came past and took a noise reading it was a breach of our licence. We all know you’re upset. But we just couldn’t risk it.”
The Australian Music Week showcase will instead take place at Miranda venue Sweaty Betty’s.
The first ever Australian Music Week conference is taking place across Sydney’s The Shire this weekend, featuring 60 massive local acts spanning the entire genre-spectrum.
Interestingly, Music Week organisers also announced that Tuka and Mind Over Matter’s scheduled show at Northies Cronulla Hotel has been cancelled, due to “the venue being unable to meet production requirements.”
