Avril Lavigne has returned with her first new music in five years, in the form of new single ‘Head Above Water’.
The track, which was preceded by an emotional letter to fans from Lavigne about the “worst years” of her life, follows the singer’s 2015 divorce from Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and her Lyme Disease diagnosis.
“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,” says Lavigne.
“My mum laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’
“In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

Lavigne released her latest album in 2013, but a new album is expected to be released later this year.
With the release of ‘Head Above Water’, The Avril Lavigne Foundation has also launched a charity t-shirt campaign to raise money for those affected by Lyme Disease who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford treatment. For more details, head to the foundation’s official website.
