The past few years for Avril Lavigne have been more than just a little complicated. In fact, they’ve been the “worst years of her life”, and she’s opened up about it in a heartfelt letter to fans.
Since releasing her last self-titled album in 2013, Avril has gone through a high profile divorce from Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, a Lyme Disease diagnosis and a dogged internet theory that she’s actually a clone named Melissa (we’re pretty sure that last one hasn’t really rattled her that much though).
“Five years have gone by since I released my last album,” Lavigne writes in the lengthy letter published on her website. “I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme Disease.
“Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles,” she continues. “I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly.
“Truly… by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.”
Lavigne has used the moment of reflection to officially announce her long-awaited return to music, releasing details of a new album, and single dubbed ‘Head Above Water’ arriving later this month.
Bring it on!
