Last week, Axl Rose with his impressive five octaves was named the best singer of all time via a list ranking artists on their vocal ranges, only to be dethroned merely days later when a more comprehensive examination found that Mike Patton reigns supreme on the voice scales, knocking Rose back down to number four.

Now Rose, via Spin, has reflected on his brief moment of glory, in the process ignoring the followup study in which he was bumped, saying it was “very flattering and humbling to be included in such an illustrious ensemble.”

“From what I could tell, the original article was for the most part only talking about the professionally recorded vocal range of the singers they compared calling the entire group “The World’s Greatest Singers,” wrote Rose.

The list claimed Axl Rose had a range that spanned five octaves, with his lowest note allegedly appearing in the the 2008 Chinese Democracy track There Was a Time and his highest in his cover of the Dead BoysAin’t It Fun.

Joining Rose in the original top five were, Mariah Carey, Prince, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, and the King of Soul James Brown. Only the latter, Mr James Brown, made it into Axl’s own list of “best singers” which he admits is “subjective” and focusses primarily on rock singers.

“That said,” he continued, “I enjoy Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Dan McCafferty, Janis Joplin, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Don Henley, Jeff Lynne, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Scott, Etta James, Fiona Apple, Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and a ton of others (predominantly 70′s rock singers) and would rather hear ANY of them anytime rather than me!”

Guns N’ Roses are currently in the middle of a 12-date residency at Las Vegas’ Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
