These days, you can turn anything into music but Backstreet Boys have well and truly taken the prize for the most inventive sample, revealing there’s a real fart on one of their records.
AJ McLean from the group let Billboard in on a long-kept secret that their 2000 single ‘The Call’ off Black & Blue includes the sound of fellow bandmate Howie Dorough doing a fart.
Max Martin, the pop producer who is still creating some of the biggest hits in music, took Dorough’s flatulent an turned it into a bass sound.
“Max gave Howie his harmony, and I think he was just putting so much air into the vocal that as he was singing, he went “dun, dun” and he farted — but he farted not only on the beat, but in key,” said Dorough about how the fart sound was even recorded in the first place.
“So Max tweaked it and made it sound like one of his patented bass sounds, and it stayed on the record.”
Dorough has confirmed it too saying, “I got in the booth, was breathing in really heavily singing my part, and I guess some extra air kind of came out.”
“It made everybody laugh, and Max decided to take that and sample it to turn it into the “dun dun dun, dun dun dun dun”.”
It’s unbelievable that they’ve managed to hang on to the secret for so long. Just imagine, how many farts we’re listening to every day through our headphones that we don’t know about.
The beans have definitely been spilled.
