Baker Boy has been awarded one of the country’s highest traditional honours, an Order of Australia, for his contribution to music and the performing arts industry.
Taking to social media to share the news, the Yolngu rapper – real name Danzal Baker – said that he’s grateful for the recognition, but is choosing not to go into it further given the receipt of the award coincides with January 26.
“(I) look forward to being able to share and celebrate it, but I do not wish to comment any further at this stage as I am in mourning for Invasion Day,” Baker wrote yesterday (January 26).
“I have spent the day peacefully marching the streets of Narrm (Melbourne) and look forward to a time where we celebrate our country, our people and their achievements on a different day out of respect for all of my First Nations brothers and sisters.”
He signed off his post by writing, “Danzal Baker OAM”.
Receiving an Order of Australia for his achievements and contribution to the music industry isn’t too shabby considering he hasn’t even put out his debut album yet.
Last year saw the release of two songs from the rapper, ‘Move‘ and ‘Better Days‘ with Sampa The Great and Dallas Woods.
