NME has reported that the kings of surf rock/pop the Beach Boys are hoping to follow up this year’s record That’s Why God Made the Radio with another new release next year. Before That’s Why God Made the Radio, it had been approximately 20 years since the Beach Boys released an album containing new material; now it seems as though the momentum of the band’s global 50th Anniversary tour has the Boys keen to get back in the studio.
Word came of a possible new record when the band’s most celebrated member Brian Wilson opened up to Rolling Stone about his eagerness to get the surviving original lineup back in the booth as soon as possible and start working an a more lively, rocking-and-a-rolling record.
“I wouldn’t mind getting together with Mike and the guys and making an exciting rock and roll album… I’m sure by early next year we’ll be ready to rock,” Wilson told Rolling Stone.
When questioned about possible side projects and distractions, original band member AJ Jardine stated that the boys are only focusing on one thing.
“The Beach Boys is the real deal. I’m not interested in that other stuff,” affirmed Jardine.
If you were lucky enough to catch the Beach Boys when they visited Australia, you were probably blown away by how spirited the music still comes across and how well the original lineup, who are all in their 60s and 70s, have preserved their voices. Whether or not you dig That’s Why God Made the Radio, The Beach Boys have still got it and may have one more classic record in the tank.
