It appears that Gotye and Kimbra’s reign over the airwaves is still to reach its zenith – at the recently concluded Billboard Music Awards, the pair crushed the competition and walked with multiple awards, while Miguel crushed some fans, and Bieber was, well, just crushed.
The dynamic Austrealand duo’s Somebody That I Use To Know is still getting traction amongst the demographic with the pair nabbing Top 100 Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top Radio Song and Top Rock Song for the little ditty that could. The habitually impressive Taylor Swift also cleaned up with her latest album Red earning her Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Country Artist, Top Country Song, for We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, and Top Country Album. So proud, Tay-Tay! (you make me so sad, Mike – ed.)
Maroon 5 and fun. were huge favourites with the BBMA, with both bands nominated for 11 albums, yet each ended up taking away just one award apiece.
Other big moments from the awards would have to include the moment some guy called Miguel damn near killed a member of the audience, then just kinda chills arse-to-floor on the stage like it ain’t no thang (below). Seriously. She probably broke her spine and/or head. Though apparently ‘Khyati’ *rolls eyes* is fine.
Old favourite Justin Bieber took home the inaugural Milestone award, only to get booed during his less-than-humble acceptance speech, which is enough to enliven even the dullest of awards ceremonies. “I’m 19 years old. I think I’m doing a pretty good job,” Bieber announced. “Basically from my heart I really just want to say it really should be about to music. It should be about the craft that I’m making. This is not a gimmick and I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously.” Apparently the crowd took him seriously enough to express their disapproval of his statement, booing him during the closing moments of his speech. So that’s legitimate, serious criticism, right?
